Barbie lovers, young and old, have been collecting Holiday Barbie dolls since they first were introduced by Mattel in 1988. Every year since the first release of the Holiday line, Mattel has dazzled collectors with beautiful dolls wearing some of the most elaborate gowns ever made. From 1988 to 1998 the dolls were part of the Happy Holiday Barbie Dolls line. In 1999 the doll was called the Millenium Princess, and in subsequent years there were Celebration and Winter Fantasy collections.

I purchased my first Holiday Barbie in 1989, the year my daughter was born. I bought her a Barbie every year for a few years to commemorate her Christmases, and then gave them to her to play with when she was a bit older. Now those early dolls command high prices so in a way I wish I had kept them in pristine condition in their boxes, but she had so much fun with her Barbie dolls it was worth it to know she enjoyed them.

It Wouldn't Be Christmas Without Barbie

Every year Mattel introduces a new Holiday edition of it's most popular doll ever. Many collectors started out buying a new doll every year for a young daughter or grandchild, and eventually began collecting their own. Holiday Barbie dolls are credited with starting the adult Barbie collector craze. One of the best things about these dolls, besides the gorgeous dresses then wear, is the price. They remain affordable enough that anyone can start their own doll collection.  And there are still lots from early years on the secondary markets like Amazon and eBay if you missed a few. You'll probably pay a little more, but once in a while you can find a real deal and get a bargain price.

I've Found eBay Is The Best Place To Find The Older Doll Versions

eBay has a vast selection of collector Barbies, including the Holiday editions. You can narrow your search to a particular year or search with more generic terms.  Make sure you check the seller feedback and read ALL of the description, not just the title. And ask any questions regarding condition and price up front. When buying a doll in the original box, I always request my the item to be double boxed, even if it costs a little more in shipping charges. The value of the doll is decreased dramatically if the box shows wear, and sometimes sellers don't realize that and package carelessly.  Just a tip if you are buying for a collection and not for a play doll.
